The history of medicine in film
The Moving Image and Sound Collection (MISC) is part of the Wellcome Library
, one of the greatest specialist collections on the history of medicine and the medical humanities. The Library houses over 2.5 million items of extraordinary range and diversity, including books, films, archives, manuscripts and artworks from around the world.
This selection of over 200 digitised videos from MISC covers all aspects of 20th century healthcare and medicine. Some of the earliest footage is from Gebel (or Jebel) Moya in the Sudan 1912-13 and shows scenes of everyday life, archaeological digging, communal sports and recreation. Later decades are represented by films featuring innovative medical and surgical techniques, drug treatments, and public health concerns.
